Jennifer Curtis, President, Releases New Book
RALEIGH-- Jennifer Curtis, President of Emerald Education, released a new book, Catalyzing Change in High School Mathematics: Initiating Critical Conversations, on April 26. Dr. Curtis co-authored the book with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Catalyzing Change in High School Mathematics: Initiating Critical Conversations focuses on the elements of mathematics that are critical for high school students to master before entering college or the workforce. The book guides teachers on how to teach and plan curricula around these concepts and how to overcome obstacles that hinder effective mathematics instruction. In addition, the book calls for the end of the practice of student and teacher tracking, which has been proven to hinder students and teachers who often need the most support.
Curtis worked with co-authors from around the country known as NCTM’s High School Task Force. They wrote this book with the high school educator and student in mind, but it is also for a variety of stakeholders interested in improving high school mathematics such as legislators, policy-makers and implementers, and school and district leaders. It is authored by past and present mathematics teachers from across the nation. Curtis drew from her experiences as the Section Chief of K-12 Mathematics at North Carolina’s Department of Public Instruction to add a North Carolina voice to the writing process.
Curtis’s intent is to address the nation’s stagnant growth in the area of high school mathematics and to start a dialogue on how schools and districts should rethink their approach of how high school mathematics are taught and perceived. The Executive Summary states that while there has been steady improvement in mathematics learning since 1990 at the elementary and middle school levels, it has not occurred at the high school level. By addressing these issues, Catalyzing Change in High School Mathematics: Initiating Critical Conversations will begin a necessary wave of improvements within the field of mathematics education. As President of Emerald Education, Inc., Curtis and her team assists schools, districts, policy-makers and education partners with the needed change in mathematics, leadership, and implementation.

Former State Superintendent June Atkinson to Lead New Start Up Company
RALEIGH—Former North Carolina Superintendent June Atkinson has been named Chief Executive Officer of Emerald Education Inc., a new start-up company dedicated to addressing education leadership development at the state, district and school levels.
As CEO, Atkinson brings extensive education leadership experience to benefit public education systems across the nation. Atkinson served three terms as North Carolina’s Superintendent of Public Instruction, capping a public education career that also included leading standards and curriculum development, developing strategic partnerships with government and non-government organizations, career technical education leadership and successful state-level policy development and implementation. Atkinson also served as president of the Council of Chief State School Officers.
“State and district education leaders need strategic support and leadership development rooted in research and enhanced by practical experience,” Atkinson said. “That’s what Emerald Education provides. I am excited to help fellow educators create innovative environments for students to excel.”
